Individual differences in need satisfaction and intentions to vote for specific political parties – results from Germany

Abstract Understanding the psychological basis of individuals' voting intentions is tremendous importance because for specific parties and politicians can influence political developments. In present study associations individuals’ satisfaction each Maslow’s five basic need categories with were investigated in a German sample these results compared to on between personality intentions. An online survey was completed by N = 2593 ( n 1035 men) individuals. Participants provided information socio-demographic characteristics, filled Need Satisfaction Inventory, Big Five stated which major they would vote if general elections held following Sunday. Data analyzed using statistical software R RStudio. Among others, it found that higher physiological needs safety security associated currently governing party alliance, CDU/CSU, versus right-wing AfD. Regarding personality, among others Openness positively nearly every (except CDU/CSU) Effect sizes overall rather small; generally speaking, those related Inventory even slightly smaller than traits. The indicate other factors aside from must be considered understand voting. Therefore, this sets starting point further investigations replicate expand findings.
